Let’s have a closer look at our forth topic:
Beating burnout
Bouncing around with loads of enthusiasm and energy from one task straight onto the next.
🔥 Burnout Problem: Being overly focused on jumping onto another file without first stopping to attend to your matter management
Sustainable strategy: When you complete a task, put aside a minute or two to attend to crucial matter management so that nothing important, like deadlines, timesheets and follow up reminders get overlooked.
Unreliable benchmarks lead to potential burnout problems if the standards you impose on yourself are too high.
🔥 Burnout Problem: Going solo because you think you ‘should’ be able to do things on your own.
Sustainable Strategy: Put up your hand for assistance instead of waiting until it’s too late.
Rushing risks arise because when you want to excel, you can be trying to do too much, too fast.
🔥 Burnout Problem: Feeling pressured to go faster to keep up with senior colleagues leads to stress, mistakes and poor decisions.
Sustainable Strategy: Set your pace to match your experience level.
Never-too-much mindset can feel positive, upbeat and helpful but can leave you under pressure, overloaded and overwhelmed.
🔥 Burnout Problem: Taking on too much overloads you beyond capacity so that you cannot keep up.
Sustainable Strategy: Be realistic about workload, factor in everything that’s already on your plate and inform senior solicitors of existing demands.
About your speaker:
Susan Marie Hill
A solicitor for more than 35 years, Susan is one of a limited pool of accredited specialists in local government and town planning law.
Also a qualified coach, Susan is the author of A New Lawyer’s Guide to Getting it Right the First Time (LexisNexis).
Aware that the high-pressure demands of legal practice left senior lawyers with little time for systematically teaching basic practical skills to juniors, Susan developed the New Lawyer Accelerator Program.
As a structured ‘one-stop shop’ training course, this program is designed to fill the gap in ‘first rung of the ladder’ daily practical skills.
An on-demand, on-line format means that, instead of missing out, new lawyers can be effectively trained by an experienced senior lawyer at their own pace. As well as accelerating the learning curve of new lawyers, by comprehensively covering the basics, this course gives much-needed hours back to busy senior lawyers.
