When you’re at the beginning of your legal career, it’s easy to be under the…
Which senior lawyer’s work should you do first?
Graduates and paralegals – have you been in a situation yet where multiple senior lawyers have given you work to do at once?
If that’s already happened to you, then you’ve probably experienced for yourself how stressful that can be.
Because you’re faced with the age-old problem – how are you supposed to choose which senior lawyer’s work to do first?
Chewing your fingernails and worrying about how on earth you’re ever going to be able to make the correct selection isn’t going to help.

But if you follow these 3 steps, then they’ll provide you with a proven pathway out of your predicament so that you can move forward effectively with your work:
- Step 1
If you’re put in a position where more than one lawyer needs urgent work completed at the same time, Step 1 is that, while it’s your responsibility to identify that there’s a genuine clash in your priorities that’s where you need to draw the line. You’re not expected to also figure out which file you should attend to first. - Step 2
Step 2 is this – instead of trying to push ahead with something that’s not actually achievable, promptly bring the clash to the attention of a senior colleague (along with an outline of your commitments and any useful suggestions that you might have about managing the workload). - Step 3
Step 3 is to wait while your senior colleagues sort out between themselves who’s work should be given your priority. If any compromises, changes or adjustments to timing need to be made then they’ll inform you of those as well, so that you can proceed accordingly.
Since these sorts of conflicts can frequently occur in busy law practices, it’s going to be to your advantage to remember to use this 3-step process to deal with them whenever they arise.
